Crash Course
A full day on the 2026 Maths papers — the topics that carry the marks, the mistakes that lose them, and the working habits that let a marker award credit.

How marks are actually awarded
The method mark, in SEAB’s own words
For a short-answer question with one part only: “2 marks are awarded for the correct answer. If an incorrect answer is given, 1 mark is awarded for the correct method.” A child who writes answer-only is giving that mark away — which is why we drill one line of working on every question.

The unit is given — use it
“Any unit required in an answer is provided and a candidate has to give his answer in that unit.” A correct number in the wrong unit scores nothing, so we teach your child to circle the printed unit before writing.

The syllabus changed for this cohort
2026 is the first P6 cohort on the 2021 syllabus
MOE’s syllabus states it directly: “In 2025, the 2021 primary mathematics syllabus applies to Primary 1 to Primary 5 only. Students in Primary 6 will continue to use the 2013 syllabus. The 2021 mathematics syllabus will be applicable to Primary 6 from 2026 onwards.”

What that means at home
Any P6 notes, worksheets or schemes of work written against the 2013 syllabus should be checked before your child revises from them. We teach against the current syllabus.
What we teach on the day
Not a re-run of the syllabus — the specific methods that turn the hardest P6 questions into something a child can start. These come straight from our trainer deck.
Fraction of the remainder, not the whole
Each later fraction acts on what is left, not the original — the number-one slip at P6. We teach the branch model, then working backwards.
Find what did not change
Every before-and-after ratio turns on one unchanged quantity — a share, the total, or the difference. Find it and one number pins down the rest.
Reverse percentage: divide to undo
After a 15% discount the price is 85% of the original — so divide, never add the percentage back.
Whose whole is this fraction?
Fractions of sets each belong to their own whole. We write the owner of every whole before computing.
Displacement: submerged or standing?
Fully submerged, add the object’s volume over the full base area. Poking out, use the reduced base area. One test picks the method.
Net rate, cut at every switch
Taps and drains: the tank feels inflow minus outflow, and every switch starts a new segment.
Plan the shaded area before computing
Name every piece and write the plan — “quadrant − kite” — before calculating. Nothing gets counted twice.
Working is the safety net
Structured questions are marked on the method, not just the answer. Three pupil scripts side by side — full credit, partial, none — makes the difference obvious.
Heuristics and methods we drill
The question types that decide the grade
- “Spent 2/5, then 3/5 of the remainder…” multi-stage money problems
- Before-and-after ratio — things added, removed or swapped
- Reverse percentage with discount, GST or interest
- Water level and displacement — a block lying down versus standing up
- Shaded-area composite figures of circles, quadrants and triangles
- Unknown angles in folded figures, not drawn to scale
- Charts where the honest answer is “not possible to tell”

Number and Algebra
- Whole numbers — four operations, order of operations, brackets
- Factors and multiples
- Fractions — four operations, dividing by a proper fraction
- Decimals — four operations, ×/÷ by 10, 100, 1000, rounding
- Percentage — of a whole, finding the whole, increase and decrease, discount, GST, interest
- Ratio — equivalent ratios, dividing a quantity, the fraction–ratio link
- Algebra — simple expressions, substitution, simple linear equations
- Rate
Measurement and Geometry
- Measurement and compound units (km/m, m/cm, kg/g, ℓ/ml)
- Time — duration and the 24-hour clock
- Area and perimeter of composite figures
- Area of a triangle — base and height
- Area and circumference of a circle, semicircle and quarter circle
- Volume of a cube and cuboid, and liquid in a rectangular tank
- Angles on a straight line, at a point, vertically opposite
- Triangles and special quadrilaterals — unknown angles in composite figures
- Nets and line symmetry
Statistics
- Tables, line graphs, bar graphs and pie charts
- Average of a set of data
