Why Paper 2 is the day
Paper 2 is 45% of the grade
Ninety of the 200 marks — more than Writing and Listening combined, and the most teachable in a day because every section runs to a method.
Synthesis is 2 marks a question
Five questions, ten marks — double a grammar item each, and the section most often left half-answered.
Open-ended comprehension is 20 marks
Ten questions, twenty marks — the allocation tells your child how many points to give. One idea for 3 marks loses two.

What the syllabus asks for
MOE’s syllabus sets out six Areas of Language Learning. Paper 2 draws on the last four especially.
Grammar, at text level
By upper primary the syllabus asks pupils to “apply knowledge of cohesive devices and grammatical structures to create links across different clauses, sentences and paragraphs” — which is precisely what Grammar Cloze and Synthesis test. Grammar stops being about single sentences.
MOE English Language Syllabus 2020 (Primary), Grammar — upper primary.
Vocabulary, used in context
The syllabus asks pupils to “use words suitable for purpose, audience, context and culture” and to “use fixed expressions accurately and appropriately”. That is why Vocabulary Cloze and Comprehension Cloze reward the word that fits the sentence, not merely a word that means roughly the same.

The tools come with the day
Every place includes one month’s access to our practice apps — so the revision carries on right through to the exam.
Who teaches the day
