Phonics Classes in Ang Mo Kio

Systematic phonics and early reading at Next Level Enrichment, Blk 709 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8 — a short walk from Ang Mo Kio MRT.

What is phonics, and why does it matter before Primary 1?

Phonics teaches a child that letters represent sounds, and that those sounds can be blended into words. It is the fastest route to independent reading. The Singapore MOE English Language syllabus assumes a child arriving in Primary 1 can already decode simple words, so a child without phonics starts P1 already behind — not because they lack ability, but because reading underpins every other subject, including Maths word problems and Science.

Which ages does Next Level Enrichment teach phonics to?

Ages 3 to 7. The core group is preschool (ages 3-6), but Next Level Enrichment also takes Primary 1 pupils who arrived at school without a phonics foundation and are struggling to decode. That is a common and entirely fixable gap, and it is better addressed in P1 than left to compound.

What does the phonics programme in Ang Mo Kio actually cover?

What the phonics programme covers

How are the classes run?

Classes are small — up to 1:8 — and run at Next Level Enrichment, Blk 709 Ang Mo Kio Ave 8, #02-2593, Singapore 560709. Small groups matter more in phonics than in almost any other subject, because a tutor has to hear each child say each sound. In a large class, a child who is mouthing along silently goes unnoticed for months.

How do I know if my child needs phonics?

Ask them to read a word they have never seen before — a simple three-letter word like 'zap' or 'mop'. A child with phonics will sound it out. A child without phonics will guess from the first letter, or go silent. Guessing from memory works until about age 6, then it stops working, and that is usually when parents notice.
