Primary 1 · Headstart drills — formal science begins at P3, so these six topics build the observing, sorting and describing habits that P3 simply assumes a child already has. Starting here is why P3 does not come as a shock.

Start here · Diagnostic, then the right drills — a short check takes about twenty minutes and marks straight to the drills your child actually needs. Eight P5 topics, three sets each, every sheet with its answer key. No child sits through work they can already do.

Inside a drill · Recall, compare, then explain — every set opens with a Remember box, moves to a comparison table, and ends with questions answered in full sentences. The last part is the one that earns marks, so it is never optional.

States of matter · Seeing the particles — children are asked to explain why a gas can be compressed and a solid cannot. Showing the particles first, then naming each state change with the heat added or removed, makes that answer sayable.

Magnets · Tap to see attract and repel — the diagram toggles between the two so a child works out the rule rather than memorising it, and the materials list corrects the usual assumption that every metal is magnetic.

Electricity · Build the circuit, then test it — five levels of closing a loop and seeing whether the bulb lights. The exam tip underneath is the part that matters: say open circuit, never “the electricity cannot jump”.

MCQ practice · The combination questions — “A and D only”, “B and C only”. These are where careless marks go, because each statement has to be judged separately before the option is picked. Practised deliberately.

Open-ended · Where the marks actually are — ruled lines sized to the marks, so a two-mark answer cannot be got away with in four words. Heat gain and heat loss must be named explicitly, which is exactly what the mark scheme looks for.

Common questions from parents

Why do children who understand Science still lose marks?

The paper marks the answer, not the understanding. A child can know exactly why the plant died and still score zero for writing 'no sunlight' instead of stating the relationship the question asked for. The open-ended section rewards a specific structure — identify the factor, state the effect, link the two — and children who are never taught that structure lose marks they have genuinely earned.
